Why become a Marywood University Cheerleader?

Want to be a leader, on the court and off?

Marywood University strives to develop the very best attributes from its’ students, whether it be through academics, athletics, or extra-curricular activities.  Cheerleading at Marywood is an important part of athletic events and community service.  The squad cheers at men and women’s home basketball games and performs during halftime at a majority of the games.  They also perform at Midnight Madness, the kick-off to the basketball season, and other various events on campus.  The squad is run by upperclassmen, under the direction of two-three captains.  The squad choreographs each routine – making it original!  The team permits both men and women to join their squad – with a total of 12-18 members.  In years past, the team has competed and won several competitions.  Competition is based on team willingness and approval.

Tryouts are held in the beginning of September each school year.  There are 3 judges and each person auditions two at a time.  Tryouts consist of a chant, cheer, dance, stunt, and tumble.  Three practices before the tryouts occur during the last week of August.  Information regarding tryouts will also be available during Orientation for New Students in July, as well as on this website.

Practices for the squad occur three times a week in the evening.  Times and dates will be discussed during the first week of practice.  Also, a schedule of basketball games will be handed out during the first week of practice so that people who have work commitments can request off for those games.  Basketball games start in November and end in February.  In the event that there is a nearby away game, the squad may cheer at that game.

Each participating squad member will be asked to sign a waiver releasing the University from any liability responsibilities.  The University will not be responsible for any medical expenses involving an injury.  All participants are required to have a personal insurance plan for all medical coverage.  If an injury or infraction occurs, at a home or away contest, the students will be fully responsible for any damages and/or expenses involved.

As a member of the Marywood Cheerleading Squad, you are not only representing Marywood University but you are also representing your fellow teammates.  Therefore, you are expected to show respect, pride, and integrity in all that you do.  This doesn’t mean not to have fun (college is the time for fun!), but to be aware that negative actions do lead to negative consequences.

To be a member of the Marywood Cheer Squad you must have a minimal GPA of 2.0 each semester and be a full-time student.  Both undergraduate and graduate students are invited to tryout.  Students with any major (from music therapy to biotechnology to education – the possibilities are endless!) are encouraged to join!  We pride ourselves on learning from each other.
